It's New Years Eve and I'm happy to be spending it at home, relaxing with my family. In many ways it was a terrible year, but there were good things, too. I was fortunate to be able to attend GDC this year, and I made some strides forward in my art! My main accomplishment was in learning how to animate game assets in Flash, a goal I have had for a long time. I was hired initially as an illustrator, and when I completed game assets they were handed over to the animator I work with, who would add some movement to the asset and upload it. Being able to handle my own animations has made me more well-rounded, and has also taken some of the burden off the animator. I'm looking forward to learning even more in the new year, especially as we transition the game from Flash to HTML5. ...

From time to time I have the opportunity to work on projects outside of my usual role as a content artist for Fish World. I always jump at the chance to contribute to these projects; because they're outside of my usual workflow I end up learning a lot every time! We have a casino within Fish World that contains slot machines, blackjack, and other games, but a long requested feature has been a roulette game. I contributed the background art for the machine, as well as the wooden roulette wheel. Here's the final art I submitted to our UI artist! Roulettesm This was done all in Photoshop. My very early sketch for the background contained a lot of hastily ...

For International Women's Day this year, my workplace Big Viking Games created this video interviewing several of the awesome women I work with! I was also interviewed and you can see my answers about things like what it's like to work in the game industry as a woman. Honestly, this is a bit of a difficult topic for me. I really want young women looking at games as a potential career to feel empowered to go for their dreams, because I absolutely love working in games and I can't imagine doing anything else! I also totally understand if someone looks at the industry as it is, and decides not to work in games because there are definite hazards to working in this field as a woman. My advice to anyone on the fence about whether to pursue games is to go in with open eyes, and try to ...

I finally ordered new business cards with my updated website on them! Made a new illustration for the card back, something that would suit the colours and theme of my website. Hot tip for designing business cards: gather many examples of cards, and base your design on your favourites. In my case, I had a huge stack of cards from game artists I met at GDC 2015. I like devoting one side of the card entirely to art, since as an artist you can use your card to showcase your work in addition to giving out your personal info!

Happy New Year everyone! I've been inspired to try to draw something, at least a little bit, every day of 2016 as my new year's resolution. So far I've been taking the opportunity to fill up a brand new sketchbook I bought a little while ago. It has been really nice drawing with pencil on paper when I spend most of my time moving anchor points around in my vector illustrations. There's a physical, tactile quality that I miss doing only vector stuff! CX_1J2oUQAE0cdQ.jpg large

I drew the cool, sexy spy Holiday from the iOS game Revolution 60! I originally got this game to support the creator Giant Spacekat, a group of mostly-female game developers. It's important to me to support other women making stuff in the games industry, especially a studio that is just getting started making games. I was so impressed by how ambitious the scope of the game was! Common wisdom is to start small, but Giant Spacekat made a really ambitious first game with fun combat, interesting characters, and a mass effect-like dialogue system with real consequences for your actions. I can't wait to see what Giant Spacekat comes up with next!

I added a new section to my website to showcase my comic book work! You can check it out by clicking the "Comics" button at the top of the site. So far I've added my comic book series about the rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte and his romance with his wife Josephine. I was crazy about history in university and drew this comic entirely on my own time out of sheer passion. It's unfinished, unfortunately! I couldn't see a way of making a living drawing comics like mine, and the drawing process was incredibly time consuming to do as a hobby. As an industry, video games have been much better to me than comics. I still love comics though! What I'd really like to do is make games that capture the narrative experience of reading comics. I just love stories. These comics were all ...

A lot of my time working on Fish World is spent making new decorations for our players to play with. I make typical tank decoration items like corals and rocks, but I get to make a lot of fantasy stuff too. We've found that players love to make fantasy scenes, and they use humanoid decos as the centrepieces to their tank creations. The game has changed over time from a fish tank simulator that's all about collecting fish, into more of a decorating game about creating cool little dioramas and scenery using decorations. Anyways, this bee girl was one of the humanoid decorations we released a few months back. It was fun to see people using her in all kinds of tanks, from garden scenes to the inside of a beehive! It's amazing to see the players get so creative. I was proud of how she ...

Ever since we released the aquatic-themed Feeding Frenzy slot machine in Fish World, I've been wanted to work on a fairy-themed one. Our players love fairies, butterflies, and pretty colours, so I knew it would be a hit! I worked with the same artist as last time, a technical artist who designed the UI and came up with almost all of the concepts for the machine. I'm a content artist, so my days and weeks are filled with creating new creatures and decorative items for release in Fish World. It takes a lot of time drawing enough things to keep the game supplied with new and exciting content every day! I had to squeeze in work on this slot machine in my spare time, and it wasn't easy! I'm really grateful I got to work on it though. It makes a nice break doing painterly stuff in ...

Wonder Woman has a new costume! I got really excited to see the new direction and decided to do a little fan art! The Mary Sue has a great article about the new costume. Wonder Woman is one of my favourite superheroes and I love seeing her looking so graceful and strong. Also appreciate that it's not strapless! I can't imagine actually fighting in a strapless uniform. I also bought Manga Studio so I used it for the linework and photoshop for the colours. Had limited success with Manga Studio so far, it's going to be a bit of work getting used to drawing with it. It's good for me to practice as much as I can though!
